Give access to the Dev Tools

Postby Lance_Lake » Tue Oct 30, 2012 11:38 am

I'd like (if possible) to be given access to the dev menu we saw in the video for eurogaming. Is there a reason why it is removed from the alpha?

C'mon guys. Let us see our own dig maps and be able to place things from that big menu of staff. :)

There are no "dev tools" - probably just a lonely Notepad++ Window and a perpetual cup of coffee....

There are dev options which are currently not included in public releases. I can see why they don't - we're testing the game not meant to be messing with it. I voted yes though, but I think a limited form would probably be best

There is a whole selection of dev tools as illustrated in the recent video.

What better way to test then to be able to set up situations to test with?

If I want to test to see if an odd number of workers try to enter an area with 200 prisioners, then why should I spend 3 hours or longer to get them that high. Access to the dev tools will enable us to see more issues and to test more things.

You can have a map with 200+ prisoners in mere seconds. Just go download one from the wiki.

Then Chris comes and points everyone to download a text editor and C compiler of their choice.

I'd actually appreciate a "campaign designer", "scenario editor", or something like that in the future, though.

I don't see why it would hurt to exactly have them; I, and I'm sure many others, would enjoy them. Maybe make it only possible to turn on by manually editing the settings file so that more casual players don't need to worry about it?

Not right now, maybe in the future they can release an SDK for custom missions sort of how blizzard releases a map editor with their RTS games. But I would like that way down the road after they have released the campaign missions and things for testing.

When I've done QA for companies (Paid QA, not volenteer QA), I've always had access to dev tools so I can set up quickly situations to test.

If Chris wants us to actually test things out, then he should give us access to the tools he uses to set things up. How does one prisioner who has a high hunger interact with someone who has a high boredom? It's situations like this that I'd like to test for and make sure it makes sense. Without the tools to do so, I can't.

I realize some people might not care about them. That's fine. But allow those who DO care about it access to it.

but we are not in this for quickly testing things. This is going to be in Alpha for a long time, and there are not going to be Bug fixes in the Alpha, just more and more additions.

I think we have it good right now. Just be happy with what you have got, and stop complaining because you don't have it all.

You misunderstand my post if you feel I am complaining.

Yes, I agree we have it good. Yes, I am happy with what we have. However, I will keep posting my concerns and issues that I run into (the dev panel being one of them) as this is what the developer of the game asked us to do.

As for not bug testing, yes. Some of us ARE here to find bugs to be fixed eventually. Access to Mantis shows that the developers DO want us posting bugs. So you seem to be mistaken in the idea that we are not here to find bugs.

About half the people agree that we should have it. Half disagree. It's up to the developers now if they wish to grant it to us. Either way, I will still be happy with the alpha so far. :)

I didn't say we where not here for bug testing, I know thats what we are here for, but as for what the devs have already said, they will not be so focused on bug fixes during the Alpha phases, but more focused on releasing new content.
