[Suggestion] Diagonal building.

Postby Adico » Mon Oct 29, 2012 7:12 pm

I am a big fan of Prisons in general (Pentonville being my favorite) but sadly, i can't make diagonals walls/foundations so i can create one like pentonville , is a very odd looking prison, i know, but if we had diagonals walls is very much possible to replicated.

How do you see diagonals being implemented with the current grid based system we have?

just add a triangular grid instead of a square one (this in terms would also allow for more detailed furniture or pathfinding improvements)

I think the game is currently sprite-based, which would make walls of arbitary direction difficult to implement.. though not unsolvable, just a rewrite of a bunch of things and some art changes. It does make things much more mathy though, which could slow development down.

I do agree that freestyle building is usually more fun than grid-based building, especially if there's tools to allow you to make professional-looking things in any direction.

yeah, a triangular grid stile takes a lot of time for sure, the suggestion is not a MUST is something the i think would make the game a LOT more flexible, not all the prisons are a bunch of rectangles.

This would indeed be cool, but most of the game as so far been designed around a grid based system such as pathing, object placement, and room designation. I think the game is too far along in its development to add diagonals on anything but an aesthetic level.

Rewrite a LOT of things... It's essentially rewriting the way the entire game is displayed. In theory it's just a square cell but with a diagonal graphic on top to make it look aesthetically diagonal. However, in reality you would then need to be able to add an entire new rotation set for every object, on the off-chance that you wanted to have an entire diagonal wall with things along it, at which point you might as well set development back a month for little to no gain.

Fair points koshensky but just for a moment imagine how much better Minecraft would have been with spheres instead of cubes...
