Anyone got metal detectors to work?

Postby FatFreddie » Mon Oct 01, 2012 10:20 pm

So, happily trying to build a working prison - then a massive fight kicks off in the showers. 15 shivs out (where have they been hiding them? :)), blood all over the place, and the doctors with some sleepless nights.

So I put a metal detector on the door to the kitchen - they go through there twice a day, that's sure to catch them. I've not noticed it working - maybe it has and I've just been occupied elsewhere but never seen a result; does anyone have any tips? You can't put them on the doorway itself, so either in either side of it works to place it, but not to catch the sneaky devils.

ETA - sorry, just realised this is the wrong forum perhaps. General would have been better.

Works fine for me, but as prisoners can walk diagonally if there is space either side of it they can bypass it so make sure it's walled in.

You'd be wrong - ANYTHING relating to the alpha builds (that is the game) belongs in here. General is for people who haven't got the game and thus should not be discussing game features being developed.

As for your question - they do work.

W - Wall.
D - Door of any kind.
M - Metal Detector.
# - empty space or flooring.

Basic and unavoidable layouts - people HAVE to pass through it (assuming no other path from A to B is available and faster). If an inmate with a weapon passes through a "search" job is added to the guard queue and will be performed at the earliest possible time.

Aha, so that's how it works. Pretty invisible to the architect unless he's really concentrating then - that's all good, cheers :)

The dedectors work but you also need a guard in range (or take a manual look at the prisoners) cause without them nobody could search for the weapons.

They work an absolute charm, if used as Illanair states.

The below picture shows what happens when some angry prisoners made their way from the cells to the canteen. Leaving the cells the prisoners must pass through a metal detector. There wasn't a single fight this night (injured are from previous scuffles!), and around 20 weapons confiscated! I've taken this prison from getting trashed every meal, 10+ prisoner escapes, a couple of deaths, 20+ injuries per meal down to a reasonably well functioning prison as well. I think at last count I had 120 prisoners, and 5 guards :p

I reckon 90% of the reason for turning the place around was the detectors! From now on I'll consider them a necessity to every build.

Yeah I see them as essential.
I have them on the kitchen, canteen (and the connecting door) as well as the prison entrance, holding cell doors and cell block doors.

A guard most likely - kitchen tools aren't the only thing they can steal.

I know, i'm just used to seeing prisoners entering through staff doors cause they likely swiped the keys. Though I don't think its detected by the metal detector (the keys).

All my kitchen doors and cantina doors is replaced by metal detectors. Every 8-cell wing has it's own metal detector. I rarely have any problems with weapons or other items :)
