Rimworld on Steam Greenlight using Prison Architect?

Postby Kilmannan » Sat Oct 19, 2013 8:03 pm

Just saw Rimworld on Steam. It's clearly using PA source / graphics, etc, so wondered what the deal was with this, or if IV were even aware of it?

There was a discussion about this already: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=44754&hilit=rimworld

In summary, it is not using the Prison Architect engine. The art is inspired by PA, but it is their own work and is not taken from PA.

Where do people even get the idea that RimWorld is "clearly" using Prison Architect source code and graphical assets? The games don't play anything alike (at least for two games in their genre: compare Mass Effect 1 and 2 for instance), and while it uses the graphical style all of the art is clearly original to RimWorld.

They home in on one thing – the limbless characters – and ignore the myriad differences. Its gameplay is much more similar to Gnomoria, and therefore Dwarf Fortress (though again, it's very different despite the similarities), but they conclude it's Prison Architect that is being copied.

The developer if Rimworld admitted that he blatantly took from the PA graphical style since r wasn't an art person. As I understand he intends to change the graphics once he can hire an artist.
