Kitchen - Food Generation Rate

Postby agaa1 » Fri Feb 15, 2013 10:49 am

I currently have 92 prisoners in my prison, and I have Meal Quantity and Meal Variety set to Medium, which as far as I can tell means that each prisoner consumes 2 meals. (I cooked 172 meals one day and a couple of people were left out, so makes sense.)

However my kitchen is currently massive. I have:

- 21 Cookers
- 18 Fridges
- 30 Cooks
- 4 Sinks

I originally got this many because I had the Cookers and Fridges with only a single space between them, and the cooks kept getting stuck on top of them for like 30mins game time. However everything has a 2-wide space between it now, so they don't get stuck anymore.

My question is... are the cooks producing to their maximum capacity, or do they just produce the amount they need to? Along with my 92 normal prisoners I am planning on introducing 144 max-sec prisoners into the prison, with separate canteens but a shared kitchen. I would hate to have to build a kitchen with 50 cookers and fridges, and 60 Cooks, for that lot. :(

My Eating times are 6am-8am and 6pm-8pm, everything else is free time.

You only get ingredients for your current prisoner count everyday at midnight (and pay for it) if you count the totals from all the boxes you will see that on default food settings you receive 2 ingredients per prisoner you have. So your cooks can't make more food than you have prisoners.

And if you get a bunch of new prisoners in the morning there won't be food for those because the ingredients where "ordered" at midnight

30 cooks is WAY overkill - i have run 100 man prisons with like 8 cooks

Further onto this topic, does anyone know the maximum output of cookers and cooks? Say I had 10 cooks, 10 cookers, 10 fridges, and stupidly large amount of prisoners. (Enough so that I couldn't feed them all) How many meals would actually be cooked?

At the current state of development, it depends on the capacity of your CPU even more than on the number of cooks or cookers. Often times, the cooks would stand idly around in the kitchen, waiting for their time in the pathfinding algorithm (see this thread). I actually discovered that by slowing my game down with the button between normal speed and pause, the cooks were able to get their job done much faster in terms of ingame time on the clock, because slowing the game down meant more CPU-cycles per ingame-minute.

So I wouldn't set too much thought by how many cooks or cookers you need. Place a few, see if it works. Optimization of food preparation is something that just can't be done at the moment ;)

Sometimes it depends on the size of the prison, cause lagg and queuing jobs can keep food production from keeping its efficiency. I can handle 125 prisoners with just 13 cooks, 7 cookers, and 6 fridges. I would suggest you add 3 meal times a day, which is what i do. http://forums.introversion.co.uk/prison ... php?t=1756 - You can check out my prison and the schedule i have put in as well. It is a small size so the lagg is not too bad, and the cooks do their jobs efficiently. The only time i have had anything close to 30 cooks was on a large prison with ~200 prisoners. But in those games the lagg gets bad so the cooks are pretty slow to do their jobs.

I have been adapting to the lost cycles in the same way.
