Paperwinia 0.9.0

Postby xander » Wed Nov 08, 2006 1:44 am

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am proud to announce the release of Paperwinia! Last year, while putting some finishing touches on Insurrection, I got bored and started playing with a text editor and some shape files. A few minutes later, I had a simple paper crane model. I decided to build a mod around this shape for two reasons -- (1) I couldn't come up with a way to use the shape in Insurrection and (2) TGF was complaining about the lack of mods that attempted to be funny. I thought the idea of a bunch of pieces of paper fighting off an army of scissors was kind of funny, so I went with it :) A year and some odd months later, I have finally found the time to more or less finish the mod.

It is a small mod -- one level, tons of new shapes. There is still a bit of work to be done -- I need to flesh out strings_default.txt, add some ornamentation to the level, add a few scripts, replace Sepulveda's picture with something more appropriate, &c. However, the level has a number of enemies, and doesn't run very well on my computer, so I want to know how the level plays for other people. Feel free to download it, and let me know what you think.

...Say I just loaded it and got an invalid map specified... anything I should change?

I'll take a look at the game txt and see what is listed to start.

EDIT//...my bad, didn't change to a new profile.

I love it! And my size of map too... I have 11fps at the start, it is just a tad laggy but playable none the less. As the level goes on it should pick up. I'm just getting started with it.

Great job...

Huge map, but the new models were great. As for the Viiri, a string of darwinians doesn't fit in too well: if you wanted to change it you could use a short string of text or something instead.

The pencils were pretty cool though: nothing to make you run away like a pencil flying at you point first

The string of DGs are paper dolls. The fit in perfectly.

True, I hadn't thought of that.

three words:

wtf?

and actually, that looks very good - and judging by insurrection I'm sure it's very playable. I'll get it when my replacement arrives in about the year 2042. :P

Just dowloaded it. Judging for the screens, I will love it.

Looks fun, and it played at 27 FPS, at least in the beggining of the level, I haven't played much yet.
But some of the units don't have the custom graphics I saw on artemis' screens: the matchstick squads, the paper ball throwing flowers(I see the paper balls), and the desk anthills.

Quit and restart Darwinia. For some reason, Darwinia does not seem to load shapes properly from mods if you don't restart it. I thought that the problem had been fixed with the 1.3 patch, but it seems that people are still having trouble. So:

Load the mod.
Quit Darwinia.
Restart Darwinia.

See if that works.

Yep, that was it. I can now see all the altered shapes. Thanks. :)
