DiskCleanup

Postby Q-Lok » Tue Jul 11, 2006 2:48 am

Hello, all. I am Q-Lok, from the Ambrosia SW forums; only xander really knows me at all. However, I have looked at most all of the mods that I could find and I realized that:

1. If everyone else could do it, why can't I?
2. All of those 'advanced techniques' are really not that hard.
3. I have all of the inspiration I need right inside my own head!
4. The editor is quite similar to Avara in style (albeit a bit easier in some regards and a bit harder in others), so I should be able to use it.

Anyway, to the point.

I was thinking about some of the elements I had encountered in Darwinia and several of its mods and decided to wrap up some loose ends and ideas I'd had while playing in a mod of my own. Hence was born DiskCleanup.

The concept: Dr. S has contacted our hero one month after the Great Viral War with a request. Sepulveda wants the player to clear out the second server partition of Darwinia, the Darwinians in which he thought to be pristine. However, he checked that area after the war only to discover that the Virus had somehow wormed its way through the partition and infected most of the alternate GlobalWorld. The Doc, of course, had been fighting what he had thought was the only source of the Virus, but the other partition had been generating its own infection army from within. Dr. Sepulveda, in turn, recalibrated the public access gateway of Darwinia to point to the second partition's 'lobby area,' Neogarden, which is where the player arrives.

The levels (to date):
    Neogarden
    Hub
    Icecap
    Desert
    Cliffs
    Forest
    Archipelago
    Shrine

---More to come; I'll get some screencaps up ASAP---

Welcome to the Darwinia forums :)

This looks like it is going to be an intresting mod. I can't wait to test it :)

OK, a ton of screencaps.

Of Neogarden (I'm definitely going to change this pretty majorly. It needs a wider start area and another Trunk Port.)
Image
Of Desert; this is what it looked like about a week ago.
Image
Of Desert; as seen with some actual stuff in it.
Image
Of Hub with stuff in it.
Image
Of Temple (Used in a cutscene only... so far.)
Image
Of Icecap; empty at the moment, but I'll put some stuff in soon.
Image
Of Forest; obviously not done, I'll probably be removing/simplifying most of those trees.
Image
Of Cliffs; I'm in the process of simplifying this level -- even my *nice* computer can barely run it.
Image
Of Archipelago; I've put almost no thought into what I want in this one.
Image
Of Shrine; the GodDish is just a placeholder until I decide what to do with that space.

So, yeah. That's pretty much an index of what I have so far. Most of the terrain I actually stole from other mods, but I promise I'll eventually make something original...

Heh. Your confidence in my abilities is astounding, if perhaps a bit misplaced. Outdoing EW? I think not. Not without an incredible amount more practice, anyway. Sooner or later, though...

Meh... how much practice do you suppose trickfred had before Enemy Within? or me before Insurrection? or TGF before Stricken Souls? You learn by doing!

The mods I've made ARE my practice.

Do, or do not. There is no try. :D

Heh. I am planning on learning a bit of Czech, too, as we are hosting a Czech student this year.

Indeed, I finished scripting the entire of the deserts in about four hours - having never scripted before -> actually it's quite easy isn't it :p

...Apparently so easy that it's taken you over a year to figure out how to do it.
