Information about Soul Destroyers

Postby Maniack » Mon Aug 01, 2005 4:22 pm

I think I've discovered something which may be useful in mods. Soul Destroyers will not swoop down to eat viral souls. Meaning, I think, engineers that are carrying exclusively viral souls will not be picked off by Soul Destroyers.

I tried making a test level for this with a little success - the Soul Destroyer didn't go for the engineer the first time.

This could open up new kinds of engineer maps - get to an area with a triffid spawning viral souls, then pass a field with a Soul Destroyer. The possibilities are endless!

I think you should test that a bit more. In my experience, if you leave an unattended engineer near an SD (with or without souls), the SD will kill it. It just might take some time -- they seem to fly about at random quite a bit.

Hmm... that's possible. I first noticed this while playing Enemy Within pt. 1, and I was engineer rushing the spam cube without wiping out the enemies. I guess it was just a fluke that the Soul Destroyer after a couple of attempts happened to ignore my souled-up engineer :)

Remember: The engineer has the MOST health in the game.

But after some testing with the map editor and my valued testing mod...

In the one (long... long... time of waiting) pass the SD decided to make at the engineer, it was destroyed on the one and only pass.

EDIT: Upon further testing, a souled up engineer was wiped out by the soul destroyer ASAP. Maybe the SD was swooping at you sideways? :?

SDs miss pretty easily. Also, you can set all units health in stats.txt :P

And the length of their tail depends on how much range you give them to romp around in.

Dunno if anyone ever said that or it was just common knowledge, but then again, I don't care!

Another pearl of wisdom from TGF.

We should make a master list of these undocumented facts...

I'm guessing that Maniak here was running at a horrid FPS.

I found that Darwinia is actually EASIER to defeat at 3 FPS than 15 FPS. Not certain why, but m'eh.

Yeah, the last level of Enemy Within pt. 1 can be pretty laggy... and I suppose my SD test level was just a fluke. Thanks for clearing that all up. False alarm, people, no new revolutionary mods will come of this.

Ayone tried a battle between green and red soul destroyers with an AI spawn point for both teams. Great fun... :)
