Errors, or just plain slowness?

Postby Azrael » Tue Feb 14, 2006 2:57 pm

I'm running the Linux Demo, and I get about 5fps. 10 if I look directly up at the sky.

I have a 733MHz i686 processor, with integrated graphics (i810), so I'm not really used to being able to play anything more than a Lemmings clone (seriously!). My brother told me about Darwinia, so I gave it a try.

Running it from the terminal, I get a giant flood of errors :

Code: Select all

[driAllocateTexture:577] unable to allocate texture

So, is it the errors or the computer that's making Darwinia run slow? And how can I get rid of the errors?

Sounds like it's basically an issue with the graphics hardware - I'm not sure of the 3D state/support on Linux for that chip, but I doubt it's powerful enough to run Darwinia properly.

Of course I could be totally wrong, here. I just about managed to run the original demo beta on a PIII 450 with a GeForce Ti4200.

I got it fixed! I searched for the error and it turned out that I had to give the chip more video RAM (i810 has no RAM anyway), by adding

Code: Select all

Videoram 16384
to xorg.conf . I can now play the game at about 10 or 15 fps - those little red darwinians are dead meat now!
