Can you paste the contents of blackbox.txt here? The library errors typically aren't the actual problem, just a problem with debugging.

To help narrow down the problem a little please could you provide the following information:

What graphics card and drivers are you using?
What is your CPU?
What is your linux kernel version?

sorry, i've only been on linux a month, so i may not know how to get all the information you need, but here's what i know -

the machine's a business machine, Compaq Deskpro EN 1GHz. most of the parts in there are pretty much generic, no brand names on them. running ubuntu 5.10 breezy badger, all repositories active along with PLF's so it *should* be up to date...

video is a Riva TNT2/TNT2 Pro. no idea what driver but it's default...
cpu is a PIII 1GHz (866mhz)
the kernel is the default in ubuntu breezy - 2.6.13 i believe
other hardware that might be of relevance is 512mb ram and an sb audigy 2

does that help any?
thanks in advance.

It might be worth trying with nVidia's proprietary drivers:

Breezy does come with the nVidia drivers - a 7xxx version (can't remember which).

At some point nVidia dropped support for older cards like the TNT2 though.

[EDIT]nVidia dropped support for older cards as of 7664. I'm pretty sure that Breezy has a more recent version. The latest verison that will work with a TNT2 appears to be 7174. The packages responsible for nVidia stuff in Breezy are nvidia-glx and linux-restricted-modules-[archname].[/EDIT]

That, or downgrade the drivers. I doubt a TNT2 is powerful enough to cope with Darwinia though, to be honest.

i'll be finding out in about an hour then. made a few calls and managed to score an old 950mhz machine with an ati card that's GOTTA be better than this old thing. will post.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libvorbis0a libgcc1

also, check if you're using the nv or nvidia driver in your xorg.conf. Just issue the following code in a console:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver | grep nv

If it tells you

Code: Select all

        Driver          "nvidia"
, then you're using the correct drivers.

If you're using an old nvidia card, try to use the legacy drivers (search the ubuntu wiki/forums for instructions on how to install the nvidia legacy drivers)

From memory:

Code: Select all

~> sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-legacy
~> sudo nvidia-glx-legacy enable

Check your xorg.conf says "nvidia" in the driver line and not "nv".

Code: Select all

~> sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Then reset your x-server [CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE] and login again.

If you are using a non-legacy card i.e. GF2 or above then remove the legacy part from the code above.

Once you have reset your x-server do the following to confirm it all works:

Code: Select all

~>glxinfo | grep render

it should say something like Direct Rendering enabled and a short summary of your card and driver - it depends on your card. If it says MESA or none then you are still not accelerated and will need to double check everything, you will probably need to install the kernel drivers or nvidia's binary drivers.

Code: Select all

~> wget http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-8774/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8774-pkg1.run
~> sudo aptitude install xserver-xorg-dev

the nvidia installer can only run in text mode. so you need to shutdown x and kill your display manager -

Code: Select all

~> sudo killall gdm

then login in text mode and -

Code: Select all

~> chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8774-pkg1.run
~> sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8774-pkg1.run

do not let the installer get a precompiled kernel module via FTP, let it compile it's own. You then need to double check xorg.conf as above, and reboot.
