I just bought the game. Do I still need to apply the patch from 2006 or has this been done upstream?

If you bought the game directly from IV an downloaded it, you should be good to go, but it doesn't hurt to check. The current Linux version should be 1.4.x (I think). If you start Darwinia, and bring up the main menu, the version that you are running should be displayed. If your version is not 1.4.x, then you need to install the patch.

The file was called: darwinia-complete-1.2.1b.sh I noticed after asking. So I guessed the patch was to upgrade it to 1.4.0b9. In the original game you draw a shape to get squad and engineers officers etc... After applying the patch I got the same system as the demo.
Was I right to upgrade?

If you prefer the gesture system (I certainly do), you can enable it in the new version. From the main menu, click "Options," then "Control Options." Up at the top, there should be a drop down for "Control Mode" with gesture and icon based as options. The gesture system requires that you hold down option while drawing shapes. The icon system requires that you hold down tab while using the mouse to select icons.

I see. I think I'll stick with the icon system as I was making error writing the squad sign so many times when I was a bit stressed to get a new squad
