Newbie - can't start game

Postby FeathersMc » Mon Dec 12, 2005 9:12 am

Hi,

I just downloaded demo 2 for linux for the first time. I am running Suse 9.1. It seemed to install OK, but crashes on start-up. Maybe I have an incompatible Graphics card - reported by YAST as ATI RV280 5961 (radeon)? Colour depth is set to 16-bit.

Any more info require, please advise.

Thanks
Les

Welcome to the forums :)

Do you get any screens and/or music before it crashes? I did find that I could get a signal 11 while the option "RenderLandscapeMode = 2" is enabled, but only when entering an actual level, as you are when running the demo2.

Try opening up ~/.darwinia/demo2/preferences.txt and finding the line:

Code: Select all

RenderLandscapeMode = 2

and change that 2 to a 1.

Hope it's of some use!

No problem!

Now that you've seen what a wonderful and useful bunch of people the Darwinia community can be, you should buy the game ;) ;)

My guess is that he has two boxes -- one Linux (on which he can play the demo), and one Windows (on which he can get the game via Steam). Of course, it could be Cedega, I suppose. Care to place a small wager on it? How about ONE MILLION DOLLARS!?

Yeah, I reckon it's either two boxes or a dual boot. Steam's a real pain to run through windows emulators, from what I've heard.

what exactly is error 11? i keep finding people with the same problem and most of them are fixed by editing preferences.txt...i haven't even gotten so far as to have the /full/ folder made...it's really frustrating since i'm not getting much info past that. nothing online to help either. could someone explain? thanks.
does it r0x0r j00r b0x0rz?

Error 11 is segmentation fault. i.e., not particularly useful in diagnosing the exact issue.
