Darwinia Linux Patch 1.2.beta2
Hi everybody
Here is Darwinia Linux 1.2.beta2. This incorporates the latest changes, as well as a recompiled installer to work on glibc 2.2.x. The installer has been tweaked to allow reinstallation, following suggestions from the previous beta. Please could you test that it works with to update existing installations, as well as from fresh (run ./uninstall to uninstall darwinia). Lastly the open-www.sh script has been modified with suggestions from Lincoln Lordello. This script is supposed to open a web-browser at the end of a darwinia-demo session -- please test it, and especially if you are not running KDE.
You can download the full version here and the demo version here.
If no issues are reported in a week, this will become the official Linux patch.
Thanks
John

Performance of Patch
In V1 the main map performed nicely. I.e. video was smooth. With the new patch, performence in levels is fine bet VERY jerky on the main map.
choppiness
There is some choppiness that wasn't there before, but after playing for a while I think its restricted to the pointer. The map and landscapes appear to glide smoothly.
hmm. works fine now.
After a bit more of playing, I take that back. I made sure I had no mod loaded and started a new game, and my pointer is now behaving like it ought to.
Previously it would also routinely get hidden by surface features, and lag really bad during mouse gestures, but none of that now. Maybe I had an old config file messing things up?
However, I did notice a visual glitch that I haven't noticed before - although it may have slipped past me. The complete bounding box of each section of the crosshair around selected unit completely masks out the pointer underneath it. That is, even the transparent areas, and even when the crosshair itself has completely faded out.
Apologies if this is a known issue..

Sure - for a limited time, http://www.cs.tut.fi/~rixa/glitch.jpg
Further impressions..
I've played this for a while now, and before I forget, here's whats on my mind:
- No crashes this far, Yard used to crash a lot on me before. I haven't done all the levels yet though.
- Receiver gave me "objectives complete" insanely early. I did not check how many souls I was producing at that time, but I hadn't yet claimed two of the islands with most receivers.
- In Generator, I could not go to the island with the trunk port to Mine through the dish on the mountain next to the port to Escort. I tried to line them up several times, but dish did not become targetable.
- On several occasions I've had extra engineers who do not show up in task manager and do not respond to CTRL-C. Do not know how to reproduce.
Loading the stricken souls mod crashes the game. I'm not sure if this is a fault with the game or the mod, but I was hoping for it to work.

Finished game
Just finished the game. No further issues that I can think of, and no crashes at all during the whole campaign. Marked improvement to initial release.

Is the fixed alignment in 1.2.beta2 (it's mentioned in the changes.txt, but perhaps that was updated later)? If so, it doesn't work for me.
Another thing that's annoying me is when selecting several officers one after the other. Let's say I select one, and then another. Then the first one moves to the location of the second one.
And a thing about performance that puzzles me a bit: When I have an area with virii, and look at it from a distance, my framerate is usually higher than when I zoom in on them, even though then there is less stuff to be shown on the screen. I don't know what the engine does in such a case, it just strikes me as odd that I have for example about 20 fps when looking at a large portion of the map, and 10 when zooming in on virii, compared to about 40 when zooming in on bare land.

StrickenSouls crashes the game:
installed it in ~/.darwinia/

If it's of any help to John, goodiemark.shp is being used as a staticshape found in the shapes folder of the mod dir, assuming it's all set up correctly it could be there's an issue with loading extra shape files from the mod dir (rather than the checking for their presance to replace the standard shapes)
madman2k; If you're keen to play the mod, try copying the shapes folder into data (you might need to make the directory). Hopefully this should alliviate the problem. (if it does it also suggests the source of the error)
I am however making wild, random guesses here.
