Apple's "Mighty Mouse" is unusual in that there are no mechanical switches for the left and right buttons--instead it has circuitry to detect the proximity of a finger.
Perhaps for that reason, I can't hold down the right button, fire lasers with my squad, and tap the left button to launch a grenade. Tomorrow (since I've already spent a shameful 17 hours playing Darwinia today) I'll try a true 3-button, wired USB mouse.
The middle scroll wheel works fine.

(edit 5/3/06: fixed left/right confusion above. Also, a real, mechanical 3-button USB mouse worked.)

You might try changing your configuration from 3-buttons to 1-button. You can then use a click-and-hold as a right-click to issue officer and armour orders, or a shift-click to fire lasers. On the other hand, a real three button mouse would probably work better...
