The preferences.txt file in ~/Library/Application Support/Darwinia is incompatible with the demo and the full game, so if you are having difficulty starting up the demo (or if you are starting always in the mine for the full game) try deleting the preferences.txt file first.
By next release we will have separate preferences.txt files, so this problem should go away.
