Failed to set screen mode

I just purchased an Introversion bundle from Steam today and cannot play Darwinia because it crashes upon startup giving the "Failed to set screen mode" error. The majority of troubleshooting for this problem are found in ancients topics, and so I am hoping there is some kind of up-to-date solution or patch since I have already tried Win 7 compatibility mode, creating a preferences.txt file, and lowering my desktop resolution.
