Vista, Mods and patch 1.5.11

Postby ragewaar » Sun Nov 11, 2007 7:42 am

Heya,

I've been trying to troubleshoot running a darwinia mod on my Vista machine for two hours now. I've done everything suggested on this forum and others with no luck at all. I have eventually managed to get it working by only patching to 1.42 (win32) and adding "ModSystemEnabled = 1" to the preferences.txt file off a wiki site.

Both the original install and 1.3 patch versions did not create any 'mods' folder in my darwinia game directory (S:\Darwinia) and even when created it still required the additional amendment before the main menu "mods" option would show up.

With the vista 1.5.11 patch installed the game reverts back to "demo2" mode (from full install), which also disables the mod menu button. The Vista 1.5.11 patch I d/l off the official site. Even adding "ModSystemEnabled = 1" to the preferences.txt in C:\Users\Ragewaar\Saved Games\Darwinia did not achieve anything (but that may be due to the game thinking it is the demo).

I would just like to say that the vista patch needs to be fixed and re-released, because those grenade effects are very cool.
I'm posting this info as it may help others to get their games/mods working and may or may not help the developers.

My PC: Vista (with windows updates installed), P4 940 (3.2x2), 2gig DDR533 Ram, Asus P5N32-Sli Deluxe, Leadtek 7600GT 256meg PCI-E with ForceWare 163.69.

That is the expected behaviour. You have to create the mods directory yourself.

Let me see if I understand this correctly -- when you install the Vista patch, Darwinia thinks that it is only the demo? Two things: first, if the game thinks that it is demo only, then you will not have access to the mod system. The demo version cannot be modded. Second, are you sure that it is reverting to the demo? I know that in the Vista version, there is a menu that appears prior to other menus which gives you the choice of playing the demo, or playing the full version. As I don't actually have access to the Windows version at the moment, I can't check this out, but I would suggest that this would be a good place to start.

In the "Other" options under options menu in the main menu, there is large white text which represent's the game version your running. After applying the vista 1.5.11 patch that white text says "win32-demo2-1.5.11". On the 1.42 patch that white text says "win32-full-1.4.2"

With the vista 1.5.11 patch installed there does not appear to be any new menu that appears before anything else - I just get thrown straight into the main land map (the spherical map with the game's levels on it). From there I can open up the main menu but nothing in the main menu seems to help.

It is not a vista problem. I have XP Pro SP2 and have exactly the same problem. I install 1.5.11 and viola - I seem to now have the demo not the full game!!! Can someone PLEASE sort this out - or I will have to start thinking that the 'independent' publishers of Darwinia is actually just like the big boys!!

No one has said that it is a Vista problem. Rather, it is a problem with the Vista patch, i.e. 1.5.x. The solution seems to be to downgrade to 1.4.x.

Excuse me, isn;t the word VISTA used in the Thread name? And isn't it the first post talking about having a problem in Vista, and has anyone else in this thread mentioned the problem in XP before me?

In any event, I found the other 1.5.1.1 thread with the answer of downloading the 'new' 1.5.1.1. from the homepage and solved my problem. In the other thread recommended this thread being closed or merged with the other thread talking about this problem. Also recommended that the patch should have been called 1.1.5.2 to differentiate it from the bad version that is still floating around the net (like Gamespy, where I downloaded my bad 1.1.5.1 from!)

Just because Vista is in the thread name doesn't mean ANYone is saying it's a Vista problem. In fact, in the OP it is outlined as a Vista patch problem.

Anyway, I have something I need all of you suffering to try. First, go to your Darwinia directory and backup your user directory somewhere safe. Then, completely uninstall Darwinia.

Find your CD, throw it into your drive and install it again. Run Darwinia once. Then, install this patch and run Darwinia again.

If it doesn't work, press Esc and see if Skip Prolouge is there. If it is, press it. If it isn't, check Options>Other and see if it is the demo files.

If it works fine, try putting your user information back in. If it stops working, something is wrong with your user files.

I can't think why it wouldn't work, unless you accidentally downloaded the demo install (I've done stupid things like this before ).
