I seem to have found a rather interesting bug in Darwinia. Actually I'm guessing it's been found before, but since I can find no mention of it (I looked, but perhaps not hard enough,) I thought I should post about it. The effect is that you can obtain as many squads as you wish, regardless of how upgraded the task manager is, but each squad will have at least one fewer squaddies than normal.
Steps to reproduce:
1. On any level, align a satellite dish.
2. Create a squad, and direct them to go through the aligned satellite dish.
3. After the first (or second, just not last) squaddie enters the dish, press C to destroy the squad.
What happens:
The squaddies that had not yet entered the dish will still be there, and will enter the dish as if you had not "ended the task." They will appear on the other side, and you will be able to control them as normal, but they won't appear in the task manager.
In a related but less important note, the number of yellow dots in the beam between the satellite dishes as the squad passes across will be equal to the number of squaddies you directed to enter the dish, regardless of how many were in or out of the link when the task was ended, but only the number that were not yet in the beam when you pressed C will appear on the other side. Also, if you let all the squaddies enter the dish before pressing C or otherwise trying to kill the squad, they will still appear to be passing through the beam, but no squaddies will appear on the other side.
What should happen:
The squaddies should all disappear when the task is ended, and should not come out the other end of the satellite dish link.
There should be no yellow dots traveling through the beam.
I hope I've been clear. I tried to take a video using fraps, but didn't have any success. If anyone has any suggestions on how to take a video of this happening, let me know.
I can't imagine how they could possibly matter, but my system specs are as follows:
Windows XP Professional, all service packs and updates (up to today) installed
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz
2048MB DDR2-800 RAM (matched pair of 1gb sticks)
DirectX version 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB 1440x900 resolution, driver mv4_disp.dll version 6.14.0010.9792
I haven't tried to reproduce this on any other computer or using another installation of Darwinia. I have the latest patch available from introversion.
Again, I'm sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I couldn't find it.
Here's a screenshot of an army of squads I created using this glitch. As you can see, there's nothing in the task manager.
