can't research

Hey Guys,

I beat Darwinia as soon as it was released, and now I'm playing it again on the hardest difficulty. Still enjoying this beauty, but there seems to be a problem with my research.

I'm on the Escort level right now, but it doesn't seem to be a factor, as I cannot research on any level. I'm not sure how one gets more research, as I've never had the time to sit down and look. Is it a matter of killing enemies, or collecting souls/creating darwinians? Because nothing seems to change. My research bar is permanently stuck on the air strike v1.0 setting.

I'm playing on Steam, and have tried deleting the files and reinstalling them, then putting my profile back in the folder, but still I can't research.

Any ideas?

You gain research everytime you capture a control tower.
