Two startup bugs

Postby obsidean_00 » Fri Nov 17, 2006 4:41 am

I seem to be having a problem starting the game. I'm running Win 98 SE, it's old I know.

Anyway, for some reason when the screen mode is above 800 x 600 the game crashes with :

DirectSound ERROR
c:\Development\Darwinia\code\sound\sound_library_3d_dsound.cpp line 309

DirectSound could not locate sound device.
Error Code: DSERR_ALLOCATED
The call failed because resources (such as a priority level) were already being used by another caller.

The second error occured when by chance I set it to 800 x 600:

Error
Failed to set screen mode

Any ideas about how to fix these would be useful. I've already checked the drivers and the DirctX version and they are fine, so it doesn't seem to be those.

I used to get sometime similar when I was running teamspeak in the background. Seems that Darwinia and Teamspeak don't like sharing the same resources. If you haven't got TS running, try turning off any additional apps and utilities that are running in the background.

Me being me, I probably am completely off my rocker, but:
1. Have you tried setting your detail level lower? That could be chewing up memory, and it sounds like you're critically low on RAM.
2. There are leaks in memory somewhere in the sound settings. Try setting your sound settings lower.
3. As for your final error, I have no idea. Probably a compatability issue- I know Darwinia wouldn't run on my old 98. (xander, TF or anyone else- don't ask what's wrong with my 98! I'm just too lazy to get rid of the 740 viruses and whatnot that are running around in it!)
