No crashing but the game is extremely laggy when the map I'm on contains billions of little creatures running about. I lowered all the graphics fields to low and landscape to "I need to upgrade" (har har) but it was still extremely laggy.
These are the specs for my computer which is a PC.
OS: Windows XP Pro
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 ~2.0GHz
Memory: 896MB RAM
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9200 Serries 128 mb
I'm probably missiong something that would be more helpful but it slips my mind at the moment so just let me know if you need something else to help me. Thanks.

896MB of RAM? You have a 128, 256 and a 512? If I were you, I would consider a slight upgrade in order to have 2 equally sized sticks (ie 2x512), although I doubt its that which is causing your problem.
I believe here lies the reason "contains billions of little creatures running about". Some stages can get overrun with virii which can really bog down the system. What happens if you exit and return to the level? If that doesn't improve things then do a restart on the level and try to finish it faster.

Could be that you just need a new/better video card. If you're viewing only part of a level and things are alleviated a bit, then that's a good indication that your card's just not up to snuff. The 9200 series is pretty old, isn't it? Darwinia may be retro in style, but it's no slouch in its requirements.
Even a new 9600 should be pretty dirt cheap, and let you see a noticeable improvement (If ATi is your preferred chipset; just not a 9600SE, it has only half the pileline
