Crash on startup-need more info

Postby lennadore » Sat Jul 29, 2006 9:32 pm

I've got an Intel express chipset and am having problems starting the game. I've read the sticky on common bugs and I'm sure that's my solution. I just have no idea how to open the preferences.txt file.
Anybody got more detailed instructions for the PC impaired?

preferences.txt is just text file. You can open it up with Notepad, Wordpad, MS Word, whatever. The file's location depends upon which version of Darwinia you are using:

Code: Select all

Using the Steam version: \Valve\Steam\SteamApps\[user]\darwinia\
For Windows: \Program Files\Darwinia\
For Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Darwinia/full/
For Linux: ~/.darwinia/

Does that answer the question?

Well, sort of. I found the preferences notepad, typed in "RenderLandscapeMode=1", saved, then attempted to launch Darwinia. Crashed immediately. Went back to preferences notepad, all text, save the top few lines, is gone. Now what?

Okay, delete preferences.txt (or move it somewhere else), and start Darwinia. A new preferences file will be generated. Quit Darwinia and open up this new file. Add the RenderLandscapeMode line, and a blank line at the end of the file. You must have a blank line at the end of the file, or the last line will be ignored by Darwinia. Then, start Darwinia again, and see if that works.

YESSS! :D :D :D
That did it! Thanks so much for the help, Xander. (And the patience.) I'm a console player from way back but (obviously) the PC games are new to me. Can't wait to try the game! You guys are great.
