v 1.42 Memory leak / Forum bug

Postby XTRemeQG » Sun Apr 16, 2006 11:18 pm

Hi all first I wanted to thank Introvision for making such nice games :) Second, I experienced the same serious memory leak which was first visible to me in the Pattern Buffer level as described in the following topics:

http://forums.introversion.co.uk/darwin ... .php?t=450
http://forums.introversion.co.uk/darwin ... php?t=3228
http://forums.introversion.co.uk/darwin ... php?t=2812

It's a bit embaressing that even after the latest patch, this issues has not been fixed. To narrow the exact problem down for the devs, after some testing I found out that the leak is directly linked to "realtime effects" in the sound options panel. Disabling this feature fixes the problem (might be usefull to disabled it by default? :) )

As you can see in the image below... the leak is rather severe. It takes roughly 500KB - 2MB every second or so till around 1.5GB I'm forced to close the game as it becomes nearly impossible to play. Shutting the game down does deallocate everything altho I'm not quite sure whether windows is responsible for deallocation or your memory manager.

On other issues, there's a forum bug in your modified version of phpbb2. It simply crashes and burns on my normal username "}T{Reme [Q_G]". I never ever received the activation email, cannot re-send my password as my account cannot be activated. The forum tells me to contact the administrators which I cannot do as emails are not visible to people who are not logged in (see the circle?) So instead I've tried to email one of the introversion people about this via the contact page on the main site. Since I never received a reply I was forced to use an alternative email address as phpbb2 only allows you to register once with any given email address. I was going to ask the administrators to kindly activate my disabled account but it seems it has already been deleted just now (possibly autoprune). It would be nice to actually include some administrator email address in case of future problems for other users whom are unable to log in. They are now completely unable to contact anyone.

On other things, what's Introversion's connection to DMA? :) Noticed that in the last few intro screens when starting Darwinia. I remember that oldskool cracking group from like 5 years back or so. I used to have a couple of sweet looking trainers / cracks made by them but a hard drive crash wiped them all.

My last thing I wanted to show is this nice trick I used in Pattern Buffer to keep the Battle Guns automatically stocked with Darwinians. What do you guys think?

Ps. Kindly allow attachments, Im now hotlinking them via my own site ;)

This is a known issue and a fix is being worked on. Realtime effects is actually a rather nice option, so disabled by default isn't the greatest idea.

I just did a quick testrun; }T{Reme [Q_G] is a valid username. I've a feeling that your e-mail just wasn't routable at the time of registration.

It's just a bootloader that was styled to look like DMA's cracks :)

This is phpBB 2, so apart from the tiny modifications we've done to the forums, there's no attachments :P
