What the hell?

I'm running Darwinia on a low end graphics processor and I need to turn the settings to medium but they won't apply! Is this normal or what? I try to put all the settings in grahpics options to medium but they will not apply! WTF?

When you change the settings, are you on the world map? The changes don't seem to have any effect upon the world map, and I suppose that it is possible that your settings are not being applied from the world map. If you haven't already, try entering a level and making the changes, or making the changes in preferences.txt (higher numbers are lower settings) before starting Darwinia. It is a long shot, but it might work...
