Stuck To Steam.........

Postby Koldphuzion » Sun Jan 08, 2006 12:53 pm

Hi. I have very recently brought Darwinia (love the game) through Steam.
Is there any way I can actually play Darwinia without having to start up steam and without having to be connected to the net, I.E, can it be made stand-alone?

You should be able to run Steam in offline mode, but I'm not sure if you can run Darwinia without loading steam.

Edit: Apparantly, if you copy the data files from the steam directory (main.dat and sounds.dat) and put them somewhere else (eg C:\Darwinia), you can then download the patch from this site, put that in the new darwinia directory and it'll work the same as the normal (none steam) version of Darwinia.

Hi. I tried to run Darwina while steam was in offline mode but it just wouldn't run, but, I have just done what you you said above and Darwinia now runs without having to run Steam :D
Thank you.....

Haha, so much for the famous hacker- and copy-proof Steam!

There is no copy protection placed upon Darwinia. It has nothing to do with Steam -- IV decided early on that copy protection only pissed people off, and didn't really do anything useful, as any form of copy protection is soon broken, which means that it is easy for people to illegally copy the game, but a pain in the ass for anyone who legitimately bought the game to play it. I would assume that Valve have little control over the copy protection on games that they don't make, even if they are distributed over Steam.

Seemed to sort itself out after a couple of updates
