World map blank, video jumpy, and sound out of sync... Help!

Postby Dark Phoenix » Fri Dec 23, 2005 4:29 am

This just recently started happening, but when I open Darwinia, the world map sometimes loads blank (bootloaders load fine, but the sound is screwy). When it doesn't, the video is jumpyp and slow, and the sound still sucks. The weirdest part is that traces of the video appear on the edge of the screen, faint lines, as if my card were drawing everything supercompressed to the last two pixels on the border.

Oh, and I've already tried resetting my prefs. No change.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any chance you could explain the problem in more detail? It seems from your post that the world map either doesn't load (in which case, what happens?) or it loads but shows up as a line at the side of the screen. Hmm... I see no obvious solutions, although I have no idea what difference a dual-core processor makes to the running of the game. I take it that isn't the default preferences.txt - have you tried setting the graphics to a low detail level? For example, change:

Code: Select all

RenderLandscapeDetail = 2
RenderWaterDetail = 2
RenderBuildingDetail = 2
RenderEntityDetail = 2
RenderCloudDetail = 2
RenderPixelShader = 1

to

Code: Select all

RenderLandscapeDetail = 4
RenderWaterDetail = 3
RenderBuildingDetail = 3
RenderEntityDetail = 3
RenderCloudDetail = 3
RenderPixelShader = 0

and turn off some of those advanced sound settings - there are known problems with hardware sound (although I'm not aware of many of the details). IV's default settings are fairly high, and maybe we could isolate the problem in a lower detail setting.

I'm having the same issue. But mine started just after I upgraded my Athlon 3500 to an Athlon 4400 X2, so I'm wondering if it's dual core related? I also have ATI and the latest drivers.

The game played good for about 1 hour after the upgrade, though it was a little off but playable, I was in the Temple area and almost finished. Once I finished the Temple area the video went away. I didn't get to see the cut scene. Now everytime I launch the game I get the same exact result as the original poster of this thread.

Anyone got any ideas?

It does indeed sound like it's related to dual core processors. A quick google search reveals nothing, but perhaps someone who knows more about dual processors could step in :)

Ok, lets try force Darwinia to use 1 CPU.

What you'll need to do is run darwinia in a window (for now). Once darwinia is running, press the window key to select out of darwinia, then press ctrl+alt+del (or ctrl+alt+esc) to bring up the task manager.

In the process tab, find the Darwinia process under Image name, and right click it. Select 'Set Affinity', and move Darwinia to CPU 0. Then close the task manager and see if darwinia runs faster. If not, try set Darwinia over to CPU 1 and try again. Tell me if either work.

DING DING DING!!!!!

Neo you rock!!!

I totally forgot about the affinity trick. But that was the ticket. When I cranked up Darwinia, the old-school demo launch thingy with the sin wave music was playing. It was very jumpy and off beat. All the graphics were just bad. I then did the affinity to CPU0 only and it got straight instantly. When into the game and low and behold it was viewable and very very playable.

AWESOME JOB!!!! It does appear to not like dual CPU processing. I'm sure it would be an easy fix in the code if the programmers decide to work it in.

One other quick question, how do I get the end cutscene to play again? I deleted the temple txt file, and re-played the level, but it didn't fire off again after completing the goals.

Ace. To be fully honest, it was a stabb in the dark, but I'm glad that it worked, as its now in my bugs topic up top ;)

The game over script is triggered when you meed certain requirements (i.e. you finish all of the objectives in Temple). The status of these requirements is kept in game.txt, not the mission file. So, deleting the mission will not allow you to watch the cutscene over again, as (1) the buildings that trigger the cutscene will already be online and (2) the script triggers, having already been set off, will no longer be in your profile's game.txt file.

However that does not mean that you cannot watch the scene again. When you finish the game, Dr. Sepulveda gives you a special profile called (spoiler) AccessAllAreas . If you load that profile, you can play any level, and all scripts should run again. In fact, using the AAA profile, you can watch the outro as many times as you like, though it will require that you replay the level each time.

If you are even more ambitious, you could create a "Run the Outro" mod. The easiest way to do this would probably be to extract main.dat (which is a .rar file) and copy all of the files to a folder in your mods/ directory (say, OutroMod/ ). Then, using the editor or a text editor, place a script trigger in game.txt, set to Always, which runs the script gameover.txt. You should probably also change gameover.txt to get rid of the ExitLocation line (as you are not in a location when you start Darwinia, this line is unnecessary, and might cause odd things to happen).

I would recommend just using the AAA profile, but the above method would work, too, and you would not have to replay the level every time you wanted to see the outro.

or get mission_garden_liberate.txt off of my crapmods page, plonk that in your profile, and watch it over and over to your heart's content by going to the garden level and resetting between viewings

Or if you don't wanna do that, try the view ending mod on the same page

I've been going through this problem with NeoThermic. I have an X2 of my own, and experienced problems with pretty much any game. At the time I had Windows XP SP1, and either needed to manually set the task to run on one thread, or use a program called ROPE. This forces an application to run on one processor exclusively, when you click on a shortcut.

With my recent reinstall of Windows I have been running SP2 after installing/uninstalling the AMD drivers, which seems to have completely eliminated the need for ROPE. You can get the drivers here, just scroll down to "AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003".

I say uninstalling because the drivers are slightly... strange. They tend to hamper performance, but installing them seems to change a few settings in Windows; I cant be more specific because it doesnt make sense. But I know that uninstalling the drivers results in superb performance and no application troubles. You should give that a try.

Processor Trick

Postby RiC0_MD » Sat Dec 31, 2005 10:44 pm

I also have almost the exact same setup, WinXp64, Geforce 7800 GT OC, gig of corshair, etc, and the demo seemed to work okay for the most part without setting the cpus, but was slugish, and choppy. Forcing the game to run on one cpu has made a MAJOR speed improvement along with sound. I will try the new drivers recommened above and report back if this also fixes the issue.

Thanks!

ROPE would do the trick, but the registration key costs 30 British pounds - just for a program to change affinity! That's insane.

Microsoft apparently has a program that does this same thing, called imagecfg. I found it here, at this site. I haven't given it much of a shot yet (I did do a quick check to see if it fixed my problem and it seemed to - usually, when the screen goes black and I exit, the screen stays black unless I change the resolution in preferences.txt).

It's certainly annoying that Darwinia doesn't handle multi-core processors properly, but at least there's a solution. And since Darwinia doesn't multi thread (at least according to task manager's CPU usage stats), limiting it to one CPU core won't cripple its performance.

Hopefully Introversion will fix this in a future version, along with the major memory leaks associated with the audio acceleration.

One final note (okay, two) - imagecfg modifies your executable file, it doesn't act as an intermediary. Back up darwinia.exe, in case the patch for the next version requires an unmodified file. The page I linked to above suggests putting this program in your system32 directory, but that's only suggested so that you can run it from anywhere. I don't like tossing stuff randomly in my system32 directory, so I ran the utility from the Darwinia directory. No problems (and no need to add the path for darwinia.exe when the two files are in the same place)

Good fix for those using XP64, I suppose, but I can't give it a shot, since I'm using XP. :)

I'm pretty sure I've already installed the AMD drivers from there for XP, but maybe I'll install them (again?) and give it a shot with the original (pre-affinity-fix) EXE.
