In the mean time you may find disabling 'hardware 3d sound' and 'realtime FX' may avoid the problem. Reducing the number of audio channels may also help.

thankyou very much chris. Love your work ;)

also, i had sent this link to you via the form mailer, so u can ignore that i suppose, as you are now aware of the problem.

will try those suggestions and get post the results.

thanks again for this awsome game.

a user from the steam forums posted his experience when trying those suggestions.

he said that they stopped it from crashing. whilst monitoring the memory usage, it would increase to 500mb and hover around there. opposed to continual increase and then crash.

so that is a temporary fix until a patch comes! hurray!

I actually did the sound files fix and updated my vid card drivers
I did have other crashes that I believe to bee more related to the memory leak unfortunately. But I found that intermittent exiting from a level back to the main world saved my progress and made it so that there was only a little bit of redoing needed when it did crash. Leaving the game and quitting to the desktop after half an hour or so worked well and I experienced no crashes after starting that routine.
Made it so I didn't play 24 hours straight too. Avoided having my bladder explode too. Thanks for saving my health with bugs!!!

I managed to only get three crashes each in Pattern Buffer and Receiver, guess I'm lucky :) Am crashing 5 minutes into Biosphere every time, though. I tried setting all sound options to low/disabled, but it didn't help.
Athlon XP 2700+, 2GB, nForce2 audio, GF6800

EDIT: Why the heck is apparently no "--nosound" option (as in completely disable sound) for the Windows/Steam version!?!

hm, I'm having the same crash in Pattern Buffer when the reds capture an armor. I have the 3d fx turned off and the other sound setting off... but will try reducing the number of sound channels. I'm running the Steam version on a 3 GHz P4 laptop, 1 gig RAM, ATI mobility radeon X600 128 Mb.

That's better! I set sound memory usage to medium and channels to 16, and finished Pattern Buffer with no problems.

 except now Biosphere keeps crashing...

I get a crash too, whenever the enemy takes over an armor cannon.
Quite annoying as otherwise its all good.

Same problem here. As soon as a red takes over my cannon I get a "System has generated errors" windows error crash. I have also had one "Running Low on virtual Memory" error as well. This is a pretty bad leak as I have a gig of memory. One thing I noticed is that this seems to be effecting those of us with AMD chips? Has this happened to any Pentium users?

Also where is the option to turn off channels? Does that appear in the options of Darwinia? (sorry im not at home to look).

Specs:
AMD 3000 Newcastle
Asus K8N
1 Gig memory
BFG 6800 OC

My system runs newer games like BF2 and HL2 with no problem. Hope they can resolve this as this is a great game and it would be a shame if cant finish it because of bugs.

Have you followed the advice given in this thread and turned off Realtime FX and Hardware 3D Sound? That should fix the memory leak...

Yes, I turned down the sound channels and all of the other things mentioned and it worked like a charm! I just beat the game.

Thanks

xander! Think of Primary_Core!

It sounds to me like the 33 Red DGs + battle cannon bug. As with the hardware 3d sound bug, a fix has not been released. This seems to only occur with AIs, red DGs, and battle cannons, when too many go for a BC at one time.

1) The advice that I gave him almost a year ago solved his problem.
2) Holy necrophilia, Batman! This thread is almost a year old!
