Darwinia crashes on startup

Postby Beasty » Fri Dec 16, 2005 2:15 am

Hello,

I have recently downloaded Darwinia Demo through Steam. However, when I start it, it loads and a black screen comes up, then one of those Windows error messages pops in front of it and I have to close Darwinia. There is no blackbox.txt where Darwinia is installed. I have a Pentium 3 866MHz, 256MB of ram, 32MB SiS 300/305/630/540/730 and Windows XP Professional. Can anyone help me?

I'm having the same problem, though the other released demo worked fine (mine). I tinkered with settings and got into the salad bowl (a good first step), but launchpad won't work.

i want to buy this game but if it crashes on steam..

no blackbox.txt

Guess it's not my computer then! I was thinking that maybe it's because of my really old computer, but if it doesn't work on a decent computer... Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I hope the developers can try and look into the problem.

I'm getting this from memory but I believe those Vid cards are not going to work well with this game. Seems to me I read it in the readme file for the second demo. Sort of "No it's probably not going to work but you are welcome to try" kind of deal.

Ah, yes. I think I read it somewhere too. Guess I'll have to wait till I upgrade or get a new computer. Thanks for the help!

Sorry to bring this up again guys, but in the Steam info section about Darwinia, the requirements says:

Windows 98/Me/2000/XP, 600MHz CPU, 128MB RAM, DX7 based video card.

My computer meets all the requirements, but I still get the error message. I have got Microsoft Visual C++ 6, and when I click debug in the error message, MSVC++ 6 says 'Unhandled exception in darwinia.exe: 0xC0000005: Access Violation.' Here is the link to the debug report: http://www.savefile.com/projects.php?pid=322551 You will need to open it with MSVC++.

In your preferences.txt, change the line RenderLandscapeMode=

Try 0, 1 and 2 and see if any of them work

It's possible to get Darwinia to run on a 32mb SiS (NeoThermic managed it, I think), but it won't play too great.

It was a 32MB SMA S3 card in my laptop, but it did work. I used mode 0, since it was faster than 1, but 2 would actually crash Darwinia.
