Try creating a new profile. If you can't get far enough into the game to make a new profile that way, you'll have to do it this way:
1] Open the directory where you have the game installed. Go into the Users directory.
2] Create a new directory, call it whatever, but remember what it was [I recommend Crash].
3] Go back to the game directory, open preferences.txt, go to the bottom, and change the line that says "UserProfile = NewUser" or whatever your old profile is, to "UserProfile = Crash" or whatever the new directory you created in 'Users' was.
Run the game. You'll be back at the beginning again, but hey, your crash problem will be solved.

if nothing else works, undo the patching.
delete or rename or copy the following both files to somewhere else:
language.dat
patch.dat
also you need to get back your old "darwinia.exe", wich should be on your darwinia cd in the folder "gamefiles".
but you should only do that, if your game ran w/o major problems before you patched it.

If you bothered to read the changes.txt for the patch, you`d know about the new rendering modes.
You have to add the line to preferences.txt yourself if you want to change it.
from patch changes.txt:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- There are 3 possible rendering modes for Darwinia's landscape, which can be set by the preferences variable 'RenderLandscapeMode':
- RenderLandscapeMode = 0 uses Vertex Arrays
- RenderLandscapeMode = 1 uses Display Lists (default in v1.0)
- RenderLandscapeMode = 2 uses Vertex Buffer Objects
The default has now be seen to 2 (Vertex Buffer Objects), which should be faster in most cases than Display Lists. If VBO support isn't detected, we fall back to display lists.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Add this line to preferences.txt:
RenderLandscapeMode = 1
Try the other modes too. If it crashes, restart windows, change the rendermode again and try again. Post back whether it works or not with your graphics card and sound card details, incase someone else has similar spec/problems.
