Unable to start programs on Pattern Buffer
Was playing earlier, having jsut got the game yeasterday, and I was almost finished on Pattern Buffer, when I stopped being able to spawn programs, neither squads, nor engineers, nor officrs anywhere.
I'd do the gesture, it'd say "Program: {whatever}" then no matter where I clicked, nor how long I held it for the program wouldn't start.
It was a bit annoying, though I managed to complete the levle anyway, in a roundabout way by massive use of darwinians and the couple of officers I already had.
Is it possible that I had too many darwinians? I'd got 6+ cannons at all the "evil" darwinian spawns, and had engis collectiong the soulds for a long time, and I'm sure I had many hundred darwinians by the time I started having problems.

Welcome to the boards.
The number of Darwinians should not affect wether or not you can run more programs. It is possible that you had too many programs running, but it should tell you that. How many of the program slots are full? If they are all full, you can kill other programs by selecting them and hitting [CTRL] - [C].
When it says 'Program: {whatever}', does the cursor change? Are the programs that you are trying to run taking up program slots? Are you trying to deploy programs near buildings that you control?
I am sure that you have already tried those things, as you could not have gotten through the game without figuring them out... but I can't think of what else to advise... Are other aspects of the game misbehaving (i.e. are you experiencing a drop in FPS?)?
I suppose that it is possible that you have reached some kind of global unit max, though I have not heard of this happening before. What happens if you kill off a couple of DGs, and engineer or two, or a couple of officers? Can you then deploy new programs?
If none of these things help, I begin to suspect that you have found a bug. Let us know how it works out.

I tried lots of things, yes the cursor changed, to the "place squad/engineer" one when trying to run their programs, and with a circle and line through it when outside of the normal placement areas.
I tried killing off all running programs, but that didn't help, tried killing some officers, that didn't help either.
I even got to the point of ctrl-c-ing some gun turrets to see if that could be the cause, but nothing seemed to get me to the point where I could start any programs.
I didn't want to end up slaughtering the DGs, as I still wanted to finish the level, as it was my first play-through of the game, so that may have helped, but I don't know.
I ended up finishing the level with the few officers I didn't kill, then closing and restarting darwinia, and moving on the the next level, when everything was back to normal.
I doubt it'd be a system memory problem however, as the machine I'm running the game on has 1Gig memory, so my only guess would be some in-game limit.

Well, it looks as though you may have found a bona fide bug. Congratulations. So, now the trick is reproducing it... can you reliably reproduce the bug, or is it a once off? If you can reproduce it, how? More details are always better... Assuming that it can be reliably reproduced, it will likely be addressed when IV releases a patch in the future.

I just encountered this problem. I fixed it by restarting Darwinia. It doesn't go away when you reset a level or go to a different one. I had several spots open in the Task Manager, and I didn't have many Darwinians out. I was playing for many hours, though, which may have contributed to the problem.

So... I am going to ask you the same question that I asked eight months ago: can you reproduce the bug reliably? Bugs are annoying, but they can't be fixed if no one knows what is happening. So, if you can reliably reproduce the bug, let us know how. Otherwise, it is likely that it will continue to exist for another eight months, when someone else will raise this thread from the dead to complain of the same bug.

Same thing
the same thing happened to me in Temple. I had no programs running, but I could not run any new one either. The cursor changed, but left-clicking just didn't start any program...

ive noticed this one too. heck, I came here to report it, but I saw this topic first.
The only possible thing I can think of that could cause it is that somewhere in the code there is an accidental limit to how many times you can spawn a program.
Just go on a binge-run of the game. Ive made it 5 levels at most before I hit the bug.

This same thing is also happening in the Linux version. It took me quite a long time for it to hit, but I believe it was in the Biosphere level that it first presented itself. I restarted the game, finished that level and then in the Temple level it happened again. This was the most annoying one, since restarting the game also caused the Objectives to respawn.
I haven't done any hard testing, but it does sound like a similar problem to what others are experiencing.
