Red hair and freckles are both influenced by the MC1R gene. MC1R codes for a protein that balances the two types of pigment present in hair and skin.
Remember that you get two copies of every gene from your parents — so you've got two copies of the MC1R gene. Whether both are funtional is a toss-up and varies from one person to the next.
Why do red-haired people usually have so many freckles?

Re: Why do red-haired people usually have so many freckles?
All of us have ever seen yellow dots on a person's face - these are freckles, so what percentage of people have them? Freckles aren't just for fair-skinned redheads; however, they are most common among red-haired people. From 4 to 5% of the world's population have freckles. But what can cause them? I took from this site https://mywebstats.org/what-percentage-of-people-have-freckles/ They did not just appear. Freckles are caused by both genetics and sun exposure. Freckles appear when melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, builds up under the skin. Freckles may appear brown, red, or brown. They usually develop on areas of the body that are frequently exposed to sunlight, such as the hands, face, and neck.
