How do I promote my Darwinians to officers?

I'm playing Introversion Software's Darwinia (they also made Uplink and Multiwinia) on Mac, but I can't promote my Darwinians to officer level...
I've googled it, but all I can find are pages saying "draw the officer symbol", but - I think it's because this is a mac port - I don't seem to have the ability to draw.
Anyone who can help, thank you so much. It's not a very well known game, but it's pretty fun.
