Game universe

Obviously DEFCON is a stand alone game "universe", since I doubt Uplink or Darwinia would exist were it to happen (plus it has no officail plot).

My question is (since I havn't played Uplink), do Darwinia and Uplink exist in the same game universe, and are they at all connected plot wise?

Chris answered this question last year with some hand waving. He first stated that there was no canonical connection between the two, but that he thought that Darwinia took place several years before Uplink. Revelation is, he said, probably related to the virus or to the Darwinians.

It would kinda make sense. If the red DGs retain the same intelligence and awareness that the green ones have, then if someone could "steal" a few of them they could have an incredibly nasty virus. A virus that doesn't just act, but activly thinks.

There is an easter egg server in Uplink which has a WarGamesesque big-map, so Defcon isn't necessarily so unrelated as you might think. But, as xander has said, Chris has specifically separated his opinion on these connections from the IV 'canon'.

Both Uplink and Darwinia mention a corporation called "Darwin Research Associates"

In Uplink, ARC stole some "genetic algorithms" from them to build the Revelation virus.

In Darwinia, Darwin Research is the name of the company founded by Sepulveda that maintains Darwinia.

I tend to think of those more as in-jokes than actual meaningful links. If Uplink had come after Darwinia then maybe yes, but not the other way around.

Of course Subversion / UpDefWinia will link all 3 so we're told.
