I might be being utterly stupid here but where on earth is the option to exit the game when you've had enough of playing?

I couldn't find one and ended up using windows task manager to end the task and thereofore shut down the program

If you are in a level, you will have to leave the level first. On a Mac, you can hit [CMD]+[Q] to quit the game at any time -- if you are in a level, it will ask you to confirm first. I am sure that you can do something similar on a Windows box (perhaps [ALT]+[F4]?).

Indeed, I usually use Alt+F4 to quit Darwinia.

Why stop there?! Why not alt+tab out and use task manager to close it!
