just bought the game & cant even start first level

Just got the game off STEAM and I checked the patch in the game and it is all correct. The game starts up great and gets the screen to select "Garden," but it crashes everytime time it tries to load this up. Is this a graphical problem where I should just lower my graphics or is there something else?

Before we try anything else, can you confirm that you have read this thread on common bugs in Darwinia, and tried the solutions provided? Specifically, the section marked "Oh good god Darwinia just crashes!"
