I'm curious if there will be an option to buy the downloadable linux version only? I see that when you purchase it, the linux version is available for download immediately, but you still have to have the CD shipped to you.

You don't want a shiney, green CD? Why ever not?

AFAIK, the linux download is only meant to be a bonus/incentive to buy the game - as in, you get to play it right away whilst waiting for the CD to be delivered.

I'm sure if you asked IV nicely, they'd forego mailing you the CD if you truly didn't want it, but... it baffles the mind why you wouldn't want to have it. If anything, you could consider it a hardcopy backup of your downloaded version.

Most of what I have for Linux is purchased from online download only. A few (Doom 3, Quake4 & others) aren't available that way at all. It's mainly the extra cost for shipping, plus, coming across the border, Canada Post will charge me a fee for having to charge me taxes.

I also find it easier when I upgrade the OS, if I need to reinstall my games, I have them all in one location, without having to look for all the CDs.

Of course, I'm sure others would simply say I'm being cheap too.

*edit*

I'm actually one who will back up their system on a regular basis... after going through a hard drive crash once at home, I surely would have been placed in an institution if I hadn't backed up everything I had prior to that. :)

Fair enough. Being cheap's not really a bad thing - just refer to it as being 'frugal'. :D

Best thing to do, as most IV staff rarely comment on the boards unless it relates to beta testing, bugs/patches, etc. would be to email them yourself and ask - you might get a faster answer. The online store is not (again, AFAIK) set up to accomodate such a purchase, but asking them if they'd process it manually can't hurt.

Thanks, I'll do that after lunch. :)
