I, unfortunately, have no graphical talent, and wouldn't know where to begin with modifying GNUChess -- I was attempting to be humerous. However, pieces:

Pawns - DGs on both sides, they are slow and not terribly powerful, and there are tons of them.
Knights - Squaddies / Spiders, Squadies can rush into the rescue like traditional knights; spiders can jump
Bishops - Engineers / Spore Generators, bishops are religious figures, sent to convert folk; Engineers collect and convert souls, Spore Generators lay eggs, which are a device for conversion
Rooks - Battle Cannon / Triffids, they should be some kind of building to fit the theme of chess, some place fortifiable
Queen - Armour / SDs, quick, powerful, capable of great movement
King - Officer / Spam, can't move much, but very important

Anyway, that is how I would do it...

i'd like the incubator...

let there be a glass ball where the sould normally are and then let water circulate in it thus moving floating red transparent souls that are in it around!

or put M&M's in and let them come out of the front when pushing a button lol!

Ooo... I like that! However, I think green souls would be better -- but that is, like, just my opinion, man.

Or perhaps a spawn point? Again, standard spawn point, little DGs around the bottom (one of which can be used to turn on the lamp, or maybe all five of them can be used to adjust brightness), large globe-type lamp -- perhaps several fiber optic lights (you know, the kind that they use to make those bushes of light) that flash off and on, or a lens that distorts the 'shape' of the light?

I prefer the idea of a darwinian lamp to some of these other suggestions, but I'm also not sure I like the design you laid out. I'd prefer something simpler like a green translucent darwinian. At the very least it would provide more (scattered) light.

I would have to agree with that. I am very sensitive to bright lights (my optomotrist once used the word "photophobic"). I use 15 watt lightbulbs for everything. I like much softer, more diffuse light. The less focused the source of light is, the happier I am.

mmm nice
scattered light was the effect I was going for - the idea being that the little trapped DGs would subrefract the light within the prism. It doesnt show up well in my artistic impression (cos im not an artist :P). What about tinting the main body of the lamp a light green and having the lil green (darker) ones inside. Much more ambient.
