Errr, I don't know. I think that downloading music from the Web and P2P isn't illegal.

Obtaining copyrighted materials without paying is illegal.

Ripping the music from the Darwinia CD maybe a different story.

We payed for Darwinia though, right?

I would consider watching this site. All of the tresk / trash80 tracks are freely available on the internet, so I doubt that anyone would care if you took the mono .oggs and made .mp3s out of them. However, I do not know about the dma-sc track. Again, if he makes it available without pay, or states that he doesn't mind, it should be okay.

At any rate, I doubt that anyone would mind if you took the .ogg out of the game and made an .mp3 out of it -- as long as you don't distribute it without giving credit, but keep it for yourself.

xyzyxx: obtaining copyrighted material with out paying is not, in and of itself, illegal. It is easy to copyright something -- basically, you have to declare that you own the intellectual property rights to it. This post, for instance, is (c) me. However, I have stated (or am about to now) that I don't care what is done with these posts, as long as it is not slanderous or libelous. Making copies of my copyrighted posts would not be illegal. Same goes for the tresk / trash80 tracks: he holds the copyright, but distributes them for free.

Well, you can get Visitor From Dreams on an Atari ST demo disk image from various sources around the net, as well as YM Rockerz's site (the team he composed the piece for originally) in mp3 format, so I'm assuming there's no real problem with it being availble in the public domain.

Yes, I'm aware of that. Sorry if I wasn't clear. :P

If we're going to be nitpicking... (to be fair, I was going to nitpick the original point) In the US and the UK, at least, you don't need to do anything at all to have copyright over your work. It automatically gets copyright. Even if you publish it anonymously, you have the copyright (although it'd be hard to prove). You actually have to take more effort to put it into the public domain (albeit only a tiny bit of effort; e.g. "This post is in the public domain").

There's no problem to share this track of mine.
But if you're concerned about having extracted it from the game or the audio CD, grab it there : http://dma-sc.atari.org/

EDIT: Hmm... does anyone know of anything that will playback SNDH files on a Macintosh? I have tried a couple of things that google finds, but they do not seem to work...

you dont actually need to download it, its in the sounds.dat file which u can open with winrar and copy it. its in .ogg format which most media players can handle and you can easily find a program to convert it to wma or mp3

Yes, it appears that the original poster figured that out as well. We were offering him other solutions. Additionally, the .ogg files in sounds.dat are all mono. The mp3s you can get are not. Thus, better quality files can be found on the internets.

During the recent American presidential election, Bush refered to 'the internets' in a debate. I assumed he knew what he was talking about. As we all know, Bush is infallible.

I can't believe I actually wrote that! Bush? In fallible? Ha!
