Darwin Research Associates => Darwinia

Postby Starfyre » Sat Sep 11, 2004 3:31 pm

Those of you who have played Uplink will probably remember the involvement of the Darwin Research Associates in the Revelation virus, since they have been subject of data theft by ARC.

A news announcement in the Uplink Internal systems noted that DRA were working on a form of paraorganic AI system / virtual life simulation code.

Now this might just be me being all conspirational and dodgy, but isn't it ironic that IV is currently working on a game called Darwinia, which also includes some aspects of simulated virtual life? Especially since DRA are part of Uplink's storyline (even if only a small one).

((Note: I do realize that Darwinia has nothing to do with Uplink, and that it's based upon game systems being hooked together; it just occured to me as a bit of a parallel and I felt like poking some fun at it.))

Your thoughts on it? :wink:

I just think the Darwinia Research Institute was made because of the whole idea of needing an 'intelligent virus' that can evolve - obviously the first name to come to mind on such a matter is Charles Darwin. Now, the concept of the Darwinia may have stemmed from this little idea for Uplink, or it may have initially been a separate idea completely. The fact that both involve evolving programs and 'Darwin' being involved is nothing more than the fact that it is a small tribute to Darwin, himself.

No I get it, the viruses in darwinia are revalation (remember the red colour) and you are playing the role of Faith's AI to gather the system resources and destroy the virus and save the internet, Each map could be like a different computer.

And you'll never guess who that coder guy is, It's good old <insert alias here> in between bank-jobs and frying mainframes.

Probably the name darwinia came from nowhere - or perhas they have seen something on discovery. Either way, probably later on, they thought about the institute, and realised it could somehow link. However regarded that as not important.

if da_zeg is right then you have just managed to work out a fundamental chunk of the storyline purely based on possible easter eggs in IV's last games

And in one of the tracks in the uplink music, there was something about "Digital dreams"

I reckon it was deliberate, a small inside joke for the people who know Uplink well enough to get it.

What you don't realise is that those instruments (PP) have been around since 1992 - I heard one in a SoundTracker file from back then.

To me they are just based off the same source, Darwin's theory of evolution.

Heh, I wonder if the viruses get a time or percentile countdown on their trace-tracker to when you bust into their level with squads a-firing. I don't care how many servers they bounced off...

I agree, although I doubt that IV didn't notice the link between the two games...
