Building's fun. I like the idea of creating your own army. Not only are you worrying about the full strategic advantages of high places watching over low valley passes (knocking out their troops as the move in on you...heh, Total Annihilation rocks!) Where was I? Oh, yeah, I like the whole resource management stuff too. It be fun.

I agree w' flamekebab too, I want to be able to replenish forces if they are wiped out.

I think he's refering to the game Cannon Fodder

The worst thing about most RTS games is that once it's released, some players will sit down with a list of all build times, costs, starting money, and work out a rush that will usually finish the game off in 5 minutes.

Maybe Darwinia could implement a way of limiting rushes, for example, a 'firewall' type defence, that is cheap, quick to build, and will block most attacks, but then breaks down after a while. This would allow players to build up their bases at the start of the game, and should mean that games last longer. Maybe it could be set that all firewalls turn off 10 minutes into the game, or something like that.

From what it looks like, base building by the player seems limited, if present atall in Darwinia. But we shall see.

I tend to suck at RTS games such as C&C Generals because I spend all my cash building a beautiful base with perfect circular defence and a symmetrical layout then some tosser who uses rush tactics turns up and destroys it all...if I can hold out for the first ten minutes I'm fine though :P But base building is definitely a good idea; also it adds even more to mod...however I can't see any evidence of base building in the video. It would be cool if you could like build little defence turrets in territory you'd already conquered...or maybe a "Z" style of gameplay? Now that was a kick ass game...

I'd say, from what pics and vids (well, vid) I've seen that there would be some sort of base-building capability - or, at the very least 'defend the structure'. Example: In the demo vid, 'new' troops appeared to spawn from buildings, but once their troops in the area were wiped out, the building would change colour, and no more troops would be produced. Watch the vid if you don't know what I mean - the part where Green, Red and Blue army have a 3-way fight.

As I say, its quite possible, that even if you can't build your own structures, you would still need to defend ones crucial to your 'war effort'.

The storyline is said to be based on some 2D Sprites stuck in a 3D universe.

I guess that you have to save these. i.e If they die then Game Over.

Side Note.

Would 2D objects not be invisible in a 3D universe (due to infinite lack of depth [thinness]) and therefore not need rescuing?

The sprites dont need rescuing....

The story is that some scientist made some arcade machines 20 years ago, but they were faulty (in some way I cant remember at the mo.). This scientist locks himself away for 20 years thinking what he could do with thousands of machines, then he got it! Connect them up as a super computer! So he does, and starts doing experiments about evolution on them.

However, a virus evoles in the system, and not wanting all his research to be destroyed, the scientist sends in some software (I think) to defeat the virus. You are the software...

Sprites? Universe?

Side note: You can see 2D things in a 3D universe, look at your TV. The images aren't 3D are they? No, they are 2D. But can you see them? Yes.

Yes in a way you can see the objects in two dimentions, but this is because light in the pattern of these objects has been projected from a 3D object (I know it's vauge but there are so many different types of TV nowadays) onto your retinae.

Just like a photo, the objects are not actually present therefore you don't see them but a representation of the light reflected from them when it struck the camera

I apologise for my ignorance on the storyline, I don't read PCG and that is what I managed to piece together from various posts on this forum.

EDIT: changed pots to posts, Damn S key

That sounds like "Tron" (the film) except with you being Tron, and with a lack of "Users" to help you out. Although the scientist could provide that?

The scientist does provide the 'User' aspect in a way. From what I got out of PCG was that your upgrades are story oriented as being 'recovered research' the scientist uses to create better programming to help you destroy the virus. It'll be fun to see excatly how that'll play out. This's better than Christmas.
