Building or battling?

Postby Sirveri » Fri Jun 25, 2004 11:06 pm

Me, I like to build shit. When I play RTS games I like to build and build and build some more and make this impressive gorgeous palace and well then someone ends up rushing me and killing me and I do not like that one bit. They recked my precious base I spent all that time and hard work on! So I dunno, what do you think, should we petition them to take out all the combat and just make it a base building sim?

No. Because that would suck.

I like to build, however, a game about base building with no other objectives isn't exactly fun for very long..

It depends on the game. I do like building in most games, but like fighting aswell. Knights and Merchants was a fun game, I often sent my initial troops to die (they consume too many resources) while I built up my village, then I could start rebuilding my army.

In RA, I build massive armies, then go on an all out assault.

Edit: If you want a building only game, go play SimCity or something

I like building buildings then building up armies then fighting etc.

Simcity is different though.
I meant more - a resource-gathering-based game with the military units removed would be, well, boring.

Simcity can be very boring! Although it can be very fun too..

Ah! The small minds of people who can only do one thing at a time :D "I like building base then army!" etc.. Heh. Well lads, I can do both at once :P HAR HAR!

And yes, Darwinia would suck if it was base building only.
We dont stop playing cos we get old... We get old cos we stop playing.

M'eh.
I can fail at many things at once too!

Seriously though, Darwinia without combat would, well, suck.

Well it was actually a attempt at humour.

What after all... bollocks... I'm saying humor like a brit now.

Oh my I said a expletive like a brit to. You people are contagious.

Anyways, the point was, I like to build the base and then go stomping. Building a base to just sort of sit around does sound kinda silly though. And in all honesty, we have no idea really what this game is, right? I mean, I couldn't get the avi to play that is over at snipers'. I guess what I'm saying, is that if this is anything like a traditional RTS, which I doubt it will be. I would love it if Rush tactics were discouraged.

In other words I did not like the new version of Command & Conquer.
Look honey, I'm hax0ring the academic records, now I'll be able to get a job!

It's always fun to build something and then battle with it. That's somewhat like Star Wars: Droidworks, an educational game for small children. But it's fun to build your character in any game and then do battle, because then you get inside that character.

You need the Xvid codec in order to view the movie. Download this and it should work (right click on link and choose "Save Target As...." (if using IE))

Well, from waht I've read, in Darwinia, you take control of strike teams sent in to the system, so you wouldn't build at all.

It's an interesting to build small bases and things, like Stronghold, very fun game, but a idea I like is somthing along the lines of Codename: Panzer, you select your initial troops and then as you move through the level, you will find gun posts, vechicles, ect, and you can take them over after killing whoever occupied it before... Just a thought , but from the video, Darwinia looks so fast pace that you wouldn't have enough time to build anyway.

As jimmy said, get the codec, just as the web page says. See, if ya read the news rather then spamming the forums, you might know something about this game :P Heh.

I actually don't like RTSes when you just have units and no bases - it's like you have one chance - if your units die, you can't get more and you're fucked.

In the 2 page interview with PCG, Chris says that it's a 'cannon fodder' style game which means to me, 'Don't worry about your troops we'll make more. Just send them in and watch 'em die.' Somewhere in that article it also says that the interface is rather easy left click to move right click to shoot. I think where the stragey will come in will be the how and where of delopiment not so much how many and with what. Read the article first page second column. It's under exposure on the Darwinia main page.
