How many have signed up for the beta test?

On IRC last night, Chris (the lead developer) said that around 400 people have signed up already. Joy

1 in 4 chances of being chosen, if you go on random probability by itself (i.e., not taking into account forums attendance, helpfulness, and all the other factors IV said it will look for). Perhaps I should say 1 in 4 people will be chosen, then, more accurately.

He also pretty much said that the selection process will be done on hardware. So if ya think hanging around the forums will help your chances, I wouldnt bet on it

I think my hardware has a decent (read: slightly above-average) chance of getting me chosen, simply because: a.) I wish it does and b.) it's a middle-of-the-road system (about 2, 2.5 years old). All I can do is wait and hope.

I don't think any specific type of hardware will help you get a place since they'll probably want as varied specs as possible to root out as many bugs as possible, since this beta is probably aimed to be mainly the technical bugs, and they'll want to flush them all out, whereas the second beta is probably about gameplay bugs and the like, which is more important that they have good testers who write good reports. Not that I have anything to base this on other then my own assumptions.
