The odds are far better than that...Chris imported all the users who have been active recently in the Uplink forums and most of these won't have even heard of Darwinia...basically, those people who have more than one post have signed up for the beta.

Uplink was endless

Postby Exelcior » Fri Jun 25, 2004 10:21 pm

Ive played uplink since it was released and I still play it to this date. IV Did amazingly well creating that game. The possibilities were endless. With all of those mods that were released and the added LAN hacking feature the game grew to a state of infinate possibilities. So many people play uplink that the mods never stop coming, They are still being mnade. Each getting better than the last. This is my first post on the forums as I have heard about Darwinia and decided to sign for Beta as I would like the opportunity to make this game trully special. If IV put as much thought and effort into Darwinia we will have an amazing, origional game that will blow most players away with the complexity and detail that IV will more than likely include in this game. Thank you for reading

Most everyone here has probably signed up for the test. Anyone who liked Uplink will probably sign up because Uplink was so good, chances are Darwinia will be awesome as well. That probably takes care of a lot of the Uplink board users. Then you add on all the other ones as well. There will be a lot of people trying to get in, and a lucky few will get to test it.

I signed for beta. Like all the others I'm hoping for my chance too :D I'd imagine forum activity is only secondary to other requirements at best. Someone who has all the requirements, but swans off again probably wont be picked, I can imagine it:

IV: Hi CoolGuy84, you've been chosen to test the Darwinia beta.
CoolGuy84: Huh, wtf? Oh...I remember that, isn't it out yet?
IV: Erm. I think I hear the phone ringing...

I signed up, mainly because I really like Introversion as a company (the idea that bedroom coders can still make it big strikes a chord with me). I want to help them make the best damn games they can, irrespective of whether or not I actually like the game itself. I mean, Uplink was fun for a while, but...

Oh, and I'll agree with Jimmy D. I've done professional testing before, and it can get incredibly tedious, playing the same level of a game over and over, walking into every possible tight spot to see if you can get stuck or if you can screw up the camera. You can't even just sit back and enjoy the game because it's still buggy. By the end of it you end up never wanting to see the bloody thing again, let alone play it :)

It's polish and attention to detail that make a good game a great game, so that's what I want to make sure they get right. A case in point would be Gish by Chronic Logic Software - a truly brilliant game mechanic, wrapped in a mediocre, bug-ridden package that has actually made me decide not to buy the game. I don't want to see the same thing happen to Darwinia.

When they do realease the Mac version, I'd be happy to beta test it (Any Idea When?!!!). I hope that they do have Mac beta testing because there are much better odds for being selected because of the few people who use Macs, although they obviously won't have as many beta testers.

Mac development and the Linux port wont happen until the full version of the game has been released. Can't remember the source. I wouldn't mind testing the Linux port as well :)

Thats what it says somewhere, I think, but I still wonder why there is a Mac Bug topic already created, and some mac hardware in the application. (Look under sound, there's generic PowerPC sound.)

I've signed up. Let's hope it doesn't go purely on forum attendance (although I doubt it will, except for a few vets) since I've been a memember of the Uplink forums since fairly close to its release, and I have about 50 posts!!! Go being too lazy to wade through posts and think of interesting things to say :D!

Edit: Well if they do go on forum attendance, and read through all the posts (very very unlikely, imagine having to do that) I just severly lowered my chances, since now I sound extremly lazy, which I doubt is what people look for in beta testers

1 in 4 chances of being chosen, if you go on random probability by itself (i.e., not taking into account forums attendance, helpfulness, and all the other factors IV said it will look for). Perhaps I should say 1 in 4 people will be chosen, then, more accurately.

He also pretty much said that the selection process will be done on hardware. So if ya think hanging around the forums will help your chances, I wouldnt bet on it ;)
