How many have signed up for the beta test?

I dunno, IV might see this thread and then after pulling uplink betas pull people who actually bothered to post on the boards. You know, people who showed that they actually care somewhat and don't just want a chance to score a free game.
Look honey, I'm hax0ring the academic records, now I'll be able to get a job!

I've signed up...but I think that most people who have signed up for beta testing will get in...Darwinia hasn't been mega publicised, so there may be less than 100 to sign up.
To those saying that there should be more places: You are forgetting that there are only two people really working on the game...they don't want to have to organise a huge beta test with thousands of people submitting bug reports (many of which will be duplicates), will they?

I havn't been a beta tester before, but a friend of mine has, and I know that it isn't just about getting a free game, it's about endlessly writing stuff down that is buggy in the game when you play, then trying to convey what went wrong to the developers, via screen shots, error logs, etc. It isn't really that fun, but when the final game comes out, you have the satisfaction of knowing you helped to make that game what it is.
Knowing how well Uplink went, I would love to try and help make Darwinia as successful. I just hope I get picked to be a beta tester

I have to disagree there. I've beta tested both Uplink and other games, and its great fun!
1) Yes, you get to play the game before other people, which is fun (even if you cant tell people you're testing it).
2) You get to help out the developers, so most likely, they will remember you in future. Even if its just browsing the forum, they see your name and think to themselves, "Oh yeah, its them! They found x bug". It nice to think that
3) Its fun trying to find things that other people have missed. YOU found that bug. YOU did something useful. YOU technically helped make a game. Its pretty cool when you think about it
Yeah, its not all about playing the game. Bug report is an effort task, especially if you have to read all of everyone else's report to make sure you dont submit a duplicate. Sounds pointless, but it helps the developers. I mean, one beta, there were 500 bugs (in a range of areas) in the first 2 days! And these were from only 50 people! These werent duplicates either. If there had been, say, 4 of each bug report cos people were lazy, thats 2000 bugs. Thats not nice. And its not like the developer can easily remember everything they fixed! So they might get to a duplicate and go "But it works fine for me?".
Meh, I signed up
Sorry if I didn't make it clear in my previous post, what I meant is that the fun doesn't come from playing the game, due to crashes, things not working etc. The fun comes from, like you said, finding the bugs and realising that it was you that made that particular part of the game work.
If I do get picked to be a beta tester, at least I'll have plenty of time, after next Monday, which is my last A level exam, (nuclear and particle physics, Oh joy!) I have 3 months holiday, until I start Uni
