For future Beta Testers (a must read).
This is the stuff which seperates the QA from the rest of the "my game isn't working! I want to play!" free-feeding cryers.

Fairly intresting stuff. I've used most of this stuff when I help support phpBB on IRC (#phpBB on freenode for those who care/want to visit/etc).
The number of people who just ask 'It doesn't work, what do I do?' is staggering. Half of the conversations with them is just getting out more information. Most of the time I do happen to solve them. Those that I don't solve I ask them to post it on the phpBB forums in support, and ask them to try add more info. Nine times out of ten, the post on the forums contains more information than they gave me and I was able to solve it.
I do ponder if this would make me a good beta tester. Knowing what the other person requires to reproduce is crtical.
Eh, only time will tell.

Very useful link thanks
I help out on a c++ coding forum; the board admins have posted this link on the top of the page to try to deal with newbs:
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
That's got some relevant stuff as well. Also one of the sections is "stuff about proper etiquette on Web forums." Some of the trolls on the Uplink boards should give it a read...

From the number of people i've helped, only 1 has been totally clueless (as in trying to use phpBB without a web server, PHP, and a supported database type).
I'ld say that number is more like 20%. Those that don't know enough can't contact others for help, and thus they are not seen.
Although the sheer number that don't RT[F]M is nearly 95%...

Thats assuming they follow links. Which none of them do. I've had that link in my sig for about a year now, and I've seen about 15 clicks on it.

Ah yes.. having graduated from Comp. Sci. last year, I keep remembering the Software Engineering module.. hated it at the time, but it intrigues me now. That same phrase keeps rolling round my head:
"A bugtest is only successful if you actually find bugs. If you don't encounter problems, the bugtest failed."
Something along those lines, anyway :)
