Multiplayer and B-Sides

Postby Darksun » Sat Jun 19, 2004 8:18 pm

See, I can create a topic. Arn't I gooood.

Basically, this is discussion (or rather, speculation) about multiplayer in Darwinia, and about the B-Sides. Chris, want to give us some clues.

Sofar we know there are plans for multiplayer Darwinia, although if it'll be multiplayer on release, or will ever be multiplayer is unknown.

B-sides include an uplink 1.31 demo, and Chris' secret project that was mentioned in a news post a while ago. What else there will be is unknown.

Chris also mentioned something about a 'Design book' or somesuch, mainly from the game plan as was written on a whiteboard [with a photo of].

Hopefully some 'this is what we looked like while making it' picutres would be nice, along with the early test versions.

Who knows... Roll on October!

If you make multiplayer, we'll get an influx of "how u uz teh multimonitar?!?!"!"!21212!"[/cynicism]

Although, it would be a lot of fun to have.

If you pause the Darwinia video at 1:56, you see a shot of the map editor :D With a bit of squinting at the Building Edit dialogue, there are T0, T1, T2 and T3 choices. I'm guessing, coupled with the number of different colored sprite men I've counted, as well as spying a "You are on TEAM 3" in the corner of a freeze-frame image from the video that this means there'll be four teams :) So I'm guessing multiplayer will be 4-player, and that each player will control a certain colour of "sprite men" army. From watching the video and watching the red arrow things being shot at, I'm not sure what each player will do, whether they form alliances or try and spread their own virus or something. All I've really sussed (I think) is that the red arrows are the virus (which is bleedin obvious :? ); why there are different colored armies, crazy chairlift things, satellite dishes that beam energy and loads more things you can guess from looking at the shot of the editor (ie: power station, laser fence, radar dish) I have no idea :D

Sorry about the long, dense post; I'm kinda excited! Go IV!

With a game like this, its somewhat easier to make multiplayer. If you watch the video again, you'll see that battle between the four diffrent coloured armies. In theory, that could just be extended to be four human players.

That would be welcome.

You mean this shot: Screen Shot?

I noticed one other thing. The 'Debug menu' has a network option. Hopefully and possibly, that could be our awated multiplayer.

As for the satalite dishes, the only thought on them is they move your units from one island to the next instantly.

Yes, I've also noticed it.
Multiplayer would be an awesome thing to have.
I just hope that developing one won't detract too much off the dev's focus on the rest of the game.
That is, if they do plan indeed to make one.

Bloody hell, the game hasn't even gone into beta testing, and you lot are asking what else will come. So damn impatient you lot. When it comes it comes, until then. Shut your trap.

What's wrong with speculation? It's not like anybody's demanding anything; it's just speculation of what there could be. Doesn't harm anyone.

<Cold_Fusion> Have I missed the answer, or has Chris successfully managed to dodge the question... IS IT MULTIPLAYER?!

<Chris> the answer is yes it has multiplayer, but that it might not on the day of release, ie a later patch may be required. multiplayer is going to take so much extra time to balance and finish that we may delay it until after game release

That was... uh... in May sometime.

yarrrr, loverly multiplayer. Personally i would rather have it take longer to develop and have MP on release than it coming out later, Cause most people tend to play games, finish them and get bored. If mp was added later on there would be a chance they wouldnt play it (probably).
