Where is the Spectrum loading screen???

Postby Darwin00uk » Wed Mar 02, 2005 10:23 am

Hey people,
got my copy yesterday fantastic and all that but..........just a minor niggle......

In the PCGamer review there was a small screen shot showing an old school spectrum loading screen and a play on the Ultimate "play the game" blurb,I can't see this anywhere in game...am I missing something?

Where is that pesky loading screen?????

You get a differewnt loading screen each time you start the game. Just exit and restart a few times. You'll see it.

Or set bootloader = spectrum in your prefs.txt and it'll come up every time

Speccy loading screen ...

Postby Refrenz » Tue Mar 08, 2005 2:39 pm

Bought a copy today - Love it! Being a ZX Spectrum fan, I notice that the spectrum loading sequence contains a loading screen that looks remarkably familiar ... unless I am much mistaken, its based on Jetpac by Ultimate!!! I'd recognise those purple mountains anywhere... :)

Yep. Jetpac rules!
Spectrum rules!

My old Spectrum Network ruled!

As I said on IRC, my next trick, when I get my hands on 2 +s, is to try and get a 3 way handshake.

I just read in another of the Darwinia forums about extracting the sounds.dat file to access the contents within. I was searching through the various .ogg files listening to ones that took my fancy, when I happened to stumble across the Speccy loading sample (speccyloader.ogg).

Being the type of person I am, I couldn't resist trying to actually load it into a Spectrum. :) Not a real Speccy (I don't have one of those anymore), but an emulator -- Spin was the first one that I had to hand. I set to it load in "Real tape mode" and played the .ogg file in WinAmp. To my pleasant surprise, the loading bars appeared in Spin straight away.

It failed to get the "Program:" header for the little loader app, but when I told it to

Code: Select all

Load "" Screen$
...after skipping over the loader it did recognise the screen image afterwards. It displayed

Code: Select all

Bytes: JPSP
...and then loaded a slightly corrupted but definitely recognisable image of the real Jetpac loading screen.

Ooh, I hope Rare don't get upset about having copyrighted material distributed with Darwinia! ;-)

Adam.

I was going to pipe the audio output into my spectrum, but it's a +2, with a builtin tape player so i doesn't have any ear/mic ports on it. :(

I edited it out here, but anybody with a good eye would notice in the ... this man put THREE links to malware!

I regret that you were looking forward to seeing the Spectrum loading screen in the game and didn't find it. Maybe you missed it, but it's actually in the game menu under "Extras." Andersen hopes you'll enjoy the rest of the game despite this.
