Well, this is a 64x64px compression of the heightmap;

I tried to replace it with a 63px one, but my filehost isn't cooperating for some reason. Is 63x63 the largest drawing capable for a map?

63x63 is the largest unsupported size that a grid guide map can be in the game - if you're "having issues", just put a single line of black pixels across a couple of the sides to make it 64 pixels. Additionally, don't use JPG unless you're going to not use any of the compression; your tiny image there is rife with artifacts from compression - png is a good choice of image format for this purpose. Also black is 0 height, not dark grey, so I'd suggest you use that instead.

Anyway, that said;

Obviously your initial drawing calls for a much larger level so I'm holding off until I get a better heightmap to work from.

How big of a heightmap would be needed, 64x64px?

As I reflect on it, I guess I wouldn't want a map TOO big, since most of the time would be eaten up by spreading out and grabbing spawn points unopposed other than fighting.

Is this any better?

If you have a height map bigger than 63*63 then you will probably run into serious problems in terms of performance. A better option would be to make each continent out of it's own 31*31 height map, thus optimising detail and performance. Not that height maps can be scaled in the dawinia ed to any size.

I was under the impression that the whole map had to be rendered with one image... is it possible to combine several island-images together on one map?

If that's the case, I can set about re-doing this to give the map some justice...

There is more than one Island in a darwinia map, as well as Multiwinia maps. You can make guide grids for any or all of them.

You must be thinking of a game that isn't Xwinia.

...Perhaps my first idea was a little too complex. I'm still trying to figure out the GGT... but for the moment maybe I should set aside the continent idea and propose something a little simpler;

And the height map.

Crater Isle

I can't seem to justify making this a 4 player map, but I think the terrain might be interesting enough for a 3 player map...
