Custom Map Server

Postby jelco » Sat Feb 28, 2009 3:06 pm

It's too bad the Map Editor is taking so long, and even though I suspect it will be first priority after the Mac version of Multiwinia is launched, the delay is getting a bit annoying. Hence, the following plan.

I'm thinking of putting together a set of custom maps in one pack, putting it up for download on multiwinia-ladder.net and creating a dedicated Dedwinia server rotating these custom maps. The maps will all have to be available here first, which means that maps created with the beta of the ME are not eligible (since they would violate the NDA). The reason that I want to put together a special pack of them is simple: I can only list games on the Ladder (which includes the Current Games list) if I've added them to the database manually. Additionally, it means that anyone feeling like playing custom maps has a whole heap at once, which avoids people not being on the same page with regards to maps.

I'll probably list games played on these custom maps on the Ladder, although I might opt to have them all unranked by default at first to avoid conflicts over balancing issues.

So, give me your thoughts about this idea, and suggest possible maps if you feel like it. :)

*cue the rotten tomatoes*

For me, not you, obviously.

There's yet another feature a maplist could have handy - automatically updating the ladder map list.

Also, whatever happened to multiwinia automatically downloading maps? =/

*is completely not into things around here*

They are probably waiting to release the map editor to implement that.

Also, considering that the mac version will, apparently, be released next week, can we wait a bit more and see if they release the map editor simultaneously?

Don't play custom maps much so no recommendations. Just posting to say I would definitely use the server if you put it up. Go for it :)

Since Ambrosia did not make me sign an NDA, I don't think I am stepping on any toes by saying this (and if I am, would someone in authority tell me to shut up), but the current Mac betas do not have a map editor. Thus I consider it unlikely that the editor will be out any time soon (where "soon" is related to the Mac launch date).
