With only the chat interface, this would be hell to get remotely useable. Don't hold your breath.

I've seen some map picking systems working purely with the chat interface. Show a list of maps people can pick, give each a number, let everyone say a number in chat and pick the most popular (or do another vote-off if there's a tie with the top 2 picked maps). It will require some work for friendliness indeed, but I think you're overcomplicating the issue. ;)

I have seen it on team fortress classic, before that glowing menu poped up for map vote.
/votemap *****

Killjoy has voted map ****
/yesvote to vote yes
/novote to keep the current map

That requires good map filenames, something that was neglected in Multiwinia development.

Is there anyway that "Hamburger Hill" can translate to "8923hijfskjsdfbmap2multi" or whatever the complex map name was?

/startvote <number of players> <mode>
[Resulting list with conveniently enumerated maps. How many could you really expect for any combination?]
/votemap <map number>

No, but an example for a level is mp_domination_4P_1.txt. Not exactly that informative.

A minor irritation, but would those running servers please take away the out of date adverts for the G15 tournament that gets spammed onto the end of every match?

Hmm? What are you on about? There are no adverts of any kind on my servers, and I've not seen any so far on other servers...

The Ladder servers advertised them, but they got replaced some time ago by the announcement for the Xfire contest which was in turn replaced by the Christmas contest. Currently, no custom messages pop up at the end of a match on the Ladder servers. It might be the Dedwinia Test trio.
